Salmonella Outbreak Sickens Hundreds from Recalled Cucumbers
Outbreak Spreads Across 31 States
449 Cases and 125 Hospitalizations Reported
An outbreak of salmonella linked to recalled cucumbers has reached 31 states and Washington, D.C., sickening 449 people and hospitalizing 125.
The outbreak strain has been identified as Salmonella Braenderup. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is investigating the outbreak in collaboration with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and state and local health departments.
Recalled Cucumbers
The cucumbers linked to the outbreak were distributed by Andrew & Williamson Fresh Produce, LLC, of Keokuk, Iowa. The recalled cucumbers were sold under the following brand names:
- Fresh Thyme
- HEB
- Little Salad Bar
- Marketside
- Nature's Promise
- Our Family
- The Kroger Co.
- Whole Foods
The recalled cucumbers were sold in 14 states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Wisconsin.
Symptoms of Salmonella
Symptoms of salmonella infection can include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Fever
- Chills
- Headache
- Muscle aches
In severe cases, salmonella infection can lead to hospitalization and even death.
What to Do
If you have purchased cucumbers from the recalled brands, do not eat them. Throw them away or return them to the store for a refund.
If you have eaten cucumbers from the recalled brands and are experiencing symptoms of salmonella infection, contact your doctor immediately.
