Kumar and Asitha Strike Early After England Go 62 Ahead
Sri Lanka vs England, 2nd Test: Day 3
England resumed their innings on day 3 with a healthy lead, and they were able to add a few more runs to their tally before losing their first wicket. However, it was the Sri Lankan bowlers who made the early inroads, with Kasun Rajitha and Lasith Embuldeniya picking up the wickets of Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope respectively.
Sri Lanka then struck again just before lunch, with Asitha Fernando dismissing Joe Root for 22. England went into lunch with a lead of just 62 runs, and they will need to bat well in the afternoon session if they want to set a challenging target for Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka's bowlers have been excellent so far in this match, and they will be hoping to continue their good work in the second innings. England, on the other hand, will need to show more resilience with the bat if they want to avoid a series defeat.
Resuming on 145-3, England lost Crawley for 6 in the fourth over of the day thanks to a fine delivery from Rajitha, which seamed away and took the outside edge of his blade. Pope, who had looked in good touch during his innings of 24, was then trapped lbw by Embuldeniya in the seventh over, with the left-armer producing a beautiful delivery that kept low and skidded on.
Root, who had been Sri Lanka's tormentor for much of this series, was then dismissed for 22 by Fernando just before the lunch break. Fernando bowled a short of a good length delivery, which Root tried to pull but only managed to glove it behind to wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella.
